Recombinant Antibodies
A recombinant antibody (rAb) is the purified product of an expression host transfected with a synthetic plasmid that corresponds to the variable region of an antibody specific to a single protein, and can be produced with or without an Fc region. A recombinant antibody has a number of advantages over the classic monoclonal antibody. Storage and loss of the hybridoma are eliminated as is hybridoma drift or mutation. Over time, some of the hybridoma cell population may change and begin to produce non-specific antibody or stop producing altogether. This can lead to unwanted, non-specific background signal in testing or the loss of a valuable testing tool. The nucleic acid sequence of the recombinant antibody is defined and can be exactly reproduced.
