Many of our cell lines utilize the firefly luciferase reporter system, in which the firefly luciferase gene is downstream of a response element specific to a particular cell signaling pathway. Upon transcription factor binding to the response element, luciferase RNA is transcribed and translated into a functional luciferase protein. After addition of luciferin, luciferase converts luciferin to oxyluciferin in a reaction that gives off light. This bioluminescent reaction is readily detected, and the amount of light is proportional to the expression of luciferase. Learn more about our luciferase reporter cell lines in this video.
